Breaker Keeps Tripping? What It Means and Who to Call in Davao
A breaker that keeps tripping is doing its job — the question is why. In Davao homes it is usually an overloaded circuit (aircon plus water heater plus rice cooker on one line), a failing appliance with a shorted motor or heating element, a ground fault from moisture in an outdoor outlet or a bathroom, or a loose or burnt connection at the breaker itself. Fault-finding with proper testing costs ₱1,000–₱3,500 including the repair for most cases; a new dedicated line for the appliance that caused it is ₱1,500–₱3,500. What it should never be fixed with is a bigger breaker.
The worst repair in Davao electrical work is also the most common: the breaker trips, someone replaces it with a higher-rated one, the tripping stops, and the wire in the wall is now carrying more current than it was ever sized for. It runs warm, the insulation ages, and the fault the breaker was warning about is still there. The breaker is the cheapest safety device in the house; treat a trip as information.
What the pattern of tripping tells you
Trips only when two big appliances run together — the aircon starts while the water heater is on, the microwave and the electric kettle — point to an overloaded circuit. The wiring is fine; the circuit is being asked for more than its rating. The fix is a dedicated line for the heavy appliance, not a larger breaker. Trips the instant a specific appliance is switched on, every time, point to that appliance: a shorted motor winding in a washing machine or pump, a failed heating element in a water heater or flat iron, a burnt cord. Unplug it and the circuit behaves. Trips that happen when it rains, or from a bathroom or outdoor circuit, are usually ground faults — moisture in an outlet, a junction box or a light fitting — and the ones most worth taking seriously.
Then there are the trips with no pattern: at random, with nothing much running, sometimes with a buzzing or a warm breaker face. Those are often the breaker itself failing, or a loose connection on its terminal heating up, or damaged insulation somewhere in the run — rats and renovation nails are both common in Davao ceilings. Safe things to check yourself
Nothing here needs you to open the panel or touch a wire:
Note what was running when it tripped. Write it down for two or three trips — the pattern is most of the diagnosis.
Unplug everything on that circuit, reset the breaker, then plug appliances back in one at a time. The one that trips it is your suspect.
Feel the breaker face and the outlets on that circuit for warmth (with the power on, touch only the plastic). Warm means a loose connection — stop using the circuit and book a visit.
Look for water: a bathroom outlet, an outdoor socket, a light fitting under a roof that leaks. Ground faults love Davao’s humidity.
Do not replace the breaker with a higher rating, do not tape it in the on position, and do not keep resetting it if it trips immediately — that is a short circuit and each reset is a small arc inside your wall.

Can I just install a bigger breaker?
No. The breaker is sized to protect the wire, not the appliance. A larger breaker lets the wire carry more current than it is rated for, which is how insulation fails inside walls. If the circuit is genuinely overloaded, the fix is a new dedicated line with its own correctly rated breaker.
The breaker trips when the aircon starts. Is the aircon broken?
Sometimes — a failing compressor or capacitor draws a big surge — but just as often the aircon is on a shared bedroom circuit that cannot handle the start-up current. Our electrician tests which; if the unit is the problem, our aircon technicians take over on the same booking.
What is the difference between a breaker and an ELCB?
